MaxBlocker Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. MaxBlocker's Ad Blocking seems to take a while to start working.   I restarted my browser and waited a few minutes, but it still seems to take a long time to start working.   Why?

A1. The reason it is happening is because the banner ads, pages, images, and scripts all are in your browser's cache.   Since the browser already has the requested files in it's cache, it does not attempt to download them, and so they are not blocked.

Fix:   Make sure Ad-blocking is On, close and re-open the browser, go to the site, and click Refresh, or hold down the CTRL key and click Refresh.   This should force the browser to re-download the files, and MaxBlocker will block any ads on it's server list.

Another way to stop this is to periodically empty the browser cache.   For Internet Explorer, go to Tools > Internet Options > Delete Files.

Q2. Some times, I end up at a page that I want to see, but the only thing that shows is either a blank screen or a message saying that an ad was blocked.   I turned off ad blocking, but it still shows this way.   Why?

A2. This is almost the same as Question #1.   The Fix is to make sure Ad-blocking is Off, and then close and re-open the browser, go to the page, and click Refresh or hold down the CTRL key and click Refresh.

On some occasions, you may need to empty the browser cache.   For Internet Explorer, go to Tools > Internet Options > Delete Files.

Q3. When I first started using MaxBlocker, it deleted 46 cookies within the first minute.   Is this normal?

A3. Yes.   MaxBlocker will periodically scan your cookies and delete the ones from known Tracking Servers.   Since that was the first time you started MaxBlocker, you had a lot of cookies to be removed.   You can view a list of them in the Cookie Log, accessed from the About/Stats window.

Q4. Why is it not recommended to 'Delete All Cookies' ?

A4. Some internet web sites use session cookies to keep you logged in, for instance, when you have to input your username/ password to a site in order to access information.   This means that each time you go to a different page on the site, you must be re-logged in.   The session cookie from that site allows this to happen 'behind-the-scenes'.   If the cookie is deleted, then you will have to log-in again each time you go to a different page on the site.

This can cause things to get annoying very quickly.   The 'Delete All Cookies' function may work for some people, but not all.   This function does what it says, and it leaves no cookies behind.

Q5. I have Windows XP Service Pack 2 installed.   What should I do with MaxBlocker's Pop-up blocker ?

A5. It is currently recommended that you turn off MaxBlocker's Pop-up blocking in Windows XP Service Pack 2 with its IE pop-up blocker enabled.   You should start using one or the other, but not both, since it may become confusing as to which pop-ups are blocked by which system.

To enable or disable pop-up blocking in MaxBlocker, right-click on the MaxBlocker icon in your task tray.   To enable or disable pop-up blocking in XP SP2, go to Internet Explorer, click Tools > Internet Options > Privacy, and enable or disable pop-up blocking.

If you are an experience user, then you should not have any problems using both popup blockers in tandem.

Q6. When turning some Blocking features on or off, it does not seem to work all of the time. Why ?

A6. When turning Ad Blocking on or off, you must close IE and then re-open it for it to take effect.   The same is true for Flash Blocking.

When turning Animation Blocking on or off, you can usually refresh the page for it to take effect.

Popup and Cookie blocking features do not need anything else to be done.

Q7. How do I temporarily allow a popup without turning off Popup Blocking?

A7. Hold down the CTRL key when clicking on the link that has the popup.   MaxBlocker will allow the popups from that location from then until the next time MaxBlocker is started.
